Summer 2010:

Eastern Sierra Vertical Dance Workshop: June 30th, July 1 & 2

Youth workshop in Oakland: Aug 9-13

Intensive workshop in Oakland: Aug 13-17

Stay tuned for a schedule for the next series of "Bandaloop Wednesdays", a weekly series of master classes, aerial classes and contact improvisation classes in our studio in Oakland.

Classes Offered:

Come learn Project Bandaloop’s signature vertical/aerial technique - dance in the air, on the walls, and on the ground with core company members and artistic director, Amelia Rudolph. Workshops will cover technique, safety, training methods, and choreography, improvisation, and play. All gear will be supplied.

Since 1991, Project Bandaloop has been performing in theaters and on buildings, towers, bridges, skyscrapers, and mountains around the world. Inspired by the possibilities of climbing and rappelling, Project Bandaloop blends dance, sport, ritual, and environmental awareness to create dynamic dances that reframe how people perceive their environment and the art form. All  instructors are seasoned teachers and core company members. For most residencies, a team of at least two dancers and one Project Bandaloop rigger will be on location.

Workshop FAQ:

Where is the studio?

1601 18th St. (at Peralta)
Oakland, CA 94607
Studio phone: 510.451-5667

 What’s the closest bart station?

West Oakland bart is about a 12-15 minute walk from the studio.

Directions from West Oakland bart to the studio can be found here.

 Driving Directions from SF:

Driving from SF, stay in the right lane off the bay bridge towards 880, take the first exit off the bridge at West Grand Ave. Continue up West Grand and turn right on Peralta (just before Mandela Parkway). Studio is at the corner of 18th and Peralta.

Should I sign up for beginners or int/adv?

The beginner workshop will cover basic equipment usage and safety techniques, and is not as long, so not quite as physically demanding. If you’ve never climbed before or done aerial work in a harness, it is best to start with beginners. If you have some climbing experience and/or aerial work and you’re in fairly good shape, you can take the int/adv, or if you’ve already taken beginner once, you can try int/adv.

Can I take both workshops if beginner and int/adv are offered?

We don’t generally recommend this as its quite physically draining. If you really really want to, and you have the experience, the artistic director simply reserves the right to pull you off the rope if you are a danger to yourself or others due to safety concerns.

Can I take just one day?

Generally these workshops sell-out and registration is for both days. If you can only do one day and it’s not sold out (which is determined the Thursday before the start of the workshops) you can arrange with Amanda Moran to do just one day, but we generally don’t encourage this for continuity’s sake.

 What should I wear/bring?

Comfortable dance clothing is fine. Bring some warm clothes too.  Bring your harness if you have one, but you don’t need to bring one, we will supply all equipment. Shoes are not needed for the wall dancing. You will want to bring some water and a light snack since there is not much nearby in the neighborhood by way of markets.

 Do you have ongoing classes?

Currently we are not offering ongoing classes but hope to in the future, so let us know if you are interested in that.

Can I bring my friend to watch?

Yes.

Where can I stay in the area?

A few options close to the studio:

The downtown Marriott in Oakland.

There is also a small, privately owned hostel/home in West Oakland that may be worth checking out.
