Peter Mayfield

Rigger, Alumni Dancer

Peter is a climber, entrepreneur, dancer and rigger. As a career climber in Yosemite he pioneered first ascents on El Capitan and Half dome in the '80's, as well as climbs in Peru, Patagonia, and Alaska. He served as Chief Guide for the Yosemite Mountaineering School for seven years, and competed on a national level in climbing, achieving several top 5 finishes.   He began dancing in 1991 when he met Project Bandaloop at CityRock, an indoor climbing gym that he founded in 1990. CityRock was the first large-scale gym in the world, setting  a new standard for all indoor climbing gyms. Peter was instrumental in helping Project Bandaloop launch into the vertical as a technical director, guide, and rigger.  He danced with the company for 10 years and continues to rig when schedules permit. He is currently executive director of the non-profit Gateway Mountain Center, providing environmental education and adventure programs in the Sierra for California middle and high schools, serving over 1000 youth annually.  www.sierraexperience.org
