Mountain Dancing

A week in the Eastern Sierra for our workshop provided a
profound lung full of fresh mountain air. The three days of yoga and cliff
dancing fueled by Table Nector's organic food went smoothly and provided
challenge and beauty for all. Mark Stuver, Anje Lockhart and Rachael Lincoln
did a great job teaching with me and the support team of Hans Florine and
Thomas Cavanagh was FAST and eagle-eyed about safety. There were many break though
moments for the students as they learned what they were capable of dancing on
vertical granite. I am already looking forward to next year's workshop and hope
many of your who haven't yet had that pleasure, consider putting it on your
early summer schedule.

It's just past the summer solstice and time for the Eastern
Sierra Workshop (second annual). We will be dining on Table Nector's (
http://www.tablenectar.com/ ) organic gourmet cuisine while doing yoga and
dancing on cliffs! I look forward to waking up to the smell of sage, fir and
pine, to those first few sips of hot tea and to watching the students become
adept at our unique style of dance. This year's group looks like a good one
including two mother daughter teams and a board member. Back at home, I have just
been appointed the chair of Dance USA's council for dance companies with
budgets under $750,000 and onto their board of directors. I am thrilled by
these new challenges and look forward to getting more involved in the national conversation
about dance-related policy and advocacy.

Composer on the wall and a grant

What a sight! Dana Leong, (http://www.danaleong.com/) the commissioned composer for our new work "IdEgo" standing out sideways on the wall of our studio for the first time, playing his trombone! With some sweat appearing on his forehead, he impressed me with his adventurous and positive spirit and his ability to breath that deeply in a harness. Todd Laby, who will be creating the new set, measured and imagined what he will need to create a "station" on the wall for Dana, his cello, and his trombone. In other news, we are happy to report that we were awarded a San Francisco Foundation grant for general support for the year. The funds will help us in a wide array of goals from marketing and development to rehearsal pay for the dancers. Thank you San Francisco Foundation!

Talking to India and excited about the Sierra

We are having on-going phone meetings now with the US Embassy in New Delhi as we try to arrange a two to three city tour for the end of the year. Details such as media outlets, crowd management and rigging logistics are on the table. It is a fun thing to work on, though we feel for our partners in Delhi where it is 108 degrees Fahrenhiet. On another note, there are still spots open for our Sierra Workshop. Check out the video in our gallery from last year's workshop. Oh and the food, the food....by Table Nectar makes it over the top!

Oakland Museum Re-Opening

Last Weekend four members of the company performed for the celebration of the re-opening of the Oakland Museum. After an opening Ohlone blessing ritual, Barbara Lee and Ron Delums were on hand to make opening comments. While the wall posed challenges because it was not tall, Todd Laby created "loft enhancers" that enabled us to remain fluid and uninjured in our dancing. One turstee said after, "I was expecting to be wowed and entertained, which I was, but I wasn't expecting to be moved. I am not really one to be moved by dance." The performance also marked a first for the company. Melecio and Damara performed the duet in which they also sing. This marks the first time the company has performed amplified song on the outside of a building.

Last weekend members of the company performed for the ceremonial opening of the WAV, a subsidized artist housing project in Ventura, CA. The project, initiated by developer Chris Valasquez seeks to make affordable housing and community available to artists. The company performed "Shift" and "Inverted Duet" and were warmly received by the local community. In 2000, the company performed for another of Chris' projects in Reno Nevada that too was an artists housing project. UP next, the re-opening of the Oakland Museum, May 1st.

Wonderful Evening

Just back from a wonderful evening at Fort Baker, a remodeled army compound that looks out directly through the towers of the Golden Gate Bridge to the twinkling lights of San Francisco from its green lawns. We were there to perform as part of Turning the Tide, an environmental conference sponsored by the Institute of the Golden Gate. We made a new quartet, site-specific to the room in which we performed. It was a pleasure and the Institure took great care of us. After, Todd (my husband) and I went out to view a lovely tall wall that reaches water to high steel at the North end of the bridge.....with the city sparkling behind.... to imagine another dance.

A Thought on Site-Specific Work

I just read about a social experiment where an anonymous
violin player played six Bach pieces in the DC Metro station and very few
people stopped, or put money in his hat. Apparently several children stopped but were pulled on by
their parent. The player was world famous Joshua Bell. Two nights before, he sold out a theater
in Boston at $100 a ticket. He was playing a 3.5 million dollar violin. While it might be important at what metro station he was placed, and time of day, there
are implications in this
experiment about site-specific performance -such as, the influence of context. I think a better experiment would have put him on the street, but the experiment still raises interesting questions.

From Vancouver where I am working with Julia Taffe's Aeriosa dance company on the public library, I want to say a word about Mumbai.

Our Whirlwind trip there was fantastic and we put together a show on the Maker Maxity buildings and on two cranes for an event March 6th. The dancers rallied from the couch to perform amazingly in three separate pieces. During rehearsals on the cranes, a couple of women construction workers in bright saris with their two tiny daughters on hand, grew big smiles seeing their American sisters show such courage and beauty. Between wonderful aromatic meals and walks on the Juhu beach, the company worked hard to make our first Mumbai show fantastic. All in a weeks work.

Shadow and Light

If you went to last Saturday's Winter Party at our studio, you likely had a glass of wine in your hand and were listening to the dulcet tones Entameaba or the DJ mix, when you were asked to please step to your right to open up the active dance space for the next performance. Each performance, and there were six short pieces, took place somewhere in the studio, balcony, wall, air, floor, stairs and in this low-tech intimate environment, you were likely touched by the dance (or dancer) literally. It was a ball. Thanks to all the guest performers! The late night after party/dance jam may now be considered a tradition.

India Wrap up

We traveled to the high Himalaya last week to perform and create new site specific dances. First stop was Woodstock school, where we performed for the innauguration of the school's new gym and to celebrate its outdoor programming. The performance was warmly received by the community. Next we traveled to the Nanda Devi region where we spent a week making and filming dances on boulders and in meadows with spectacular veiws of the snowy high mountains as their majestic setting.

Filmaker Logan Scheider used a 16 mm camera to capture the dances while Todd Laby shot high definition video and Atossa Soltani shot stills of the work. The dancers worked tirelessly to build dances in five locations working collaboratively with director Rudolph. The dancers, Heather Baer, Melecio Estrella, Anje Lockhart, Damara Ganley, Rachael Lincoln, Amelia Rudolph and Mark Stuver managed freezing temperatures, uneven terrain and tough cliff dancing with good style and grace. This was helped along by rigger Stephen Schneider and operations manager Thomas Cavanagh who woke early and worked in tricky terrain to create safe envrionments for the dancers.

Along with their own support staff, the company was helped by the wonderful and tireless staff of the Mountain Shepherds, an ecotourisn guide service specializing in the region around Nanda Devi. Sunil Kainthola, the coordinator of the Mountain Shepherds, along with his staff of eight, took care of housing, tents, logistics and travel, and Raja the cook made outstanding meals at 3,500 meters. The Mountain Shepherd group is unigue in several ways. They are actively involved in issues of livelihood in the Nanda Devi biosphere, their staff collectively owns the company and they actively employ and train women. The Bandaloop support team included three women.

The central Himalaya, knows as the Garwhal, is an amazing location for adventure travel and ecotourism. The geology, fauna, flora and local community life are both beautfiul and fascinating. The Bhotia people, who live near Joshimat, lead a life that most foreigners would not believe still exists today. Within their community for example, "new comers" are those that have been there less than 150 years.

Project Bandaloop has plans to create a short film with the footage from Nanda Devi that celebrates the power and vulnerability of this unique mountain region. This trip to the Himalaya was somewhat of a "pilgrimage" for the company whose name stems from the fictitious tribe in the Tom Robbin's novel Jitterbug Perfume, a semi-imortal, shamanic tribe of playfull mustics that is said to have lived in caves in the foothills of the Himalaya and whose longevity was due in part to a dance they performed called the Bandaloop. This is the first time Project Bandaloop has traveled to and performed in the Himalaya, but they hope it is not their last.
